Melting candle wax

Each type of wax requires you to melt it to a certain temperature. Depending on the type of wax and the manufacturer's instructions, this can be as low as 150 F to as high as 185 F. Homemade candles are usually melted in a double boiler on top of the stove, but some people melt wax in a Presto Pot with a nozzle, while others may use a professional wax melter.

Adding Fragrance Oil

Knowing when to add scented oils is the key to getting a good cast. Scent dispersion is known as scent jetting. Scent sprays are classified as cold sprays and hot sprays. A cold throw is determined when the candle is not melted and a hot throw is determined when the candle is burning and the wax is melted. Some types of wax can withstand the addition of fragrances at higher temperatures, while other types of wax need to be added at lower temperatures. Our experience has shown that the lower the temperature at which fragrances are added, the better for our soy candles, container sizes and wicks. Dyes are also added to the melted wax. Dyes are available in liquid and tablet form.

Wicks

You have determined the temperature needed to melt and add fragrance, it is time to install the wick (depending on the type of candle) and then pour in the wax. For the candle manufacturer YUXIN, we use pre-made wicks and install them by using glue dots in the bottom of the container. We then use clothespins or wick sticks to hold the wicks in place, which helps keep them upright. Pouring the wax at the correct temperature and speed will result in a smooth appearance, while pouring at the wrong temperature will result in an uneven and flawed appearance, depending on the type of candle you are making.

Product Testing

Trying different melting temperatures, scent loads, pouring temperatures and wick sizes/types is critical to determining what is a good scent, proper wick burn and melt pool. Product testing is a time consuming project, but critical to candle making and producing a quality product. Our recommendation is to label each candle with the melting temperature, scent load for added temperature, wick size and pouring temperature. Perform a 2 hour test burn and record the results.

Labeling

Product labels are important for building your brand, and designing them is not as difficult as you might think. There are many easy-to-use, free programs available online. You must choose the size and style of label you want to use. We are currently switching to paper labels as they seem to work best for the price point. There are a few home companies that use vinyl labels or similar labels. Vinyl labels are more expensive, but more durable.

Once you have done all the work, you are ready to enjoy the candles you have made. Make sure to trim the wick 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch. Light the wick and let your candle burn until you have a full melt pool. Keep your candles in a safe place, away from children, pets and anything that burns!
