Principles

Dedicated flame enthusiasts probably already know this, but to make sure your candle burns evenly, you need to follow these 3 basic candle principles: trim, center, and wait.

1. Trim the wick

Do you like to burn? Remember to trim the wick 1/8 inch before each burn. You can use a wick trimmer or even a pair of scissors. This will ensure that your candle burns longer and more safely. The optimal wick length should be under one centimeter. It is helpful to do this before lighting the candle because you do not want debris to fall into the wax when it is lit. 2.

2. Center your wick

Making sure your wick is centered will allow for frictionless scenting. You can do this quickly by gently guiding the wick back to the center of the candle before each burn. Keeping the wick centered will ensure that the candle burns evenly throughout the process and does not burn more on one side. This is important because if your wick is too long or doesn't fit properly, it may cause the glass to overheat and break on one side.

3. Relax and wait for the candle to melt

Watch out for burns! This is the most critical step. When burning the candle for the first time, be sure to wait at least 3-4 hours or until the wax pool liquefies to the edge of the glass. Once the top pool of wax is completely melted, it is time to blow out the candle. A good rule of thumb is to burn the candle for one hour for each inch of the container's diameter.

Safety Notes

For safety's sake: Here are some helpful safety reminders to fully protect your family.

Don't burn near children, pets, or flammable objects

If your partner is anything like mine, he'll want to experiment near flames. That's why it's important not to leave an open flame near any children or pets that could harm yourself or others. Burn candles on a non-flammable surface where they can be seen. Never leave a burning candle unattended. It helps to keep it away from drafts so that the flame does not risk carrying and helps to burn more evenly.

Wax in glass

When most of the wax is consumed, the flame heats the container and makes the bottom of the jar hot. To prevent possible heat damage to your container and surfaces, stop burning after only 1/4" of candle remains. If you have difficulty removing the remaining wax from the candle, you can also refer to our instructions on how to clean the glass jar.
